Gingham

Continuing the discussion of a stripe- the word Gingham, originates from an adjective in the Malay language, genggang, meaning striped.

Gingham is a medium-weight balanced plain-woven fabric made from dyed cotton or cotton-blend yarn, according to Wikipedia. It also is often used as a test fabric while designing fashion, or used for making an inexpensive fitting shell prior to making the clothing in fashion fabric.

Stripes

Thinking of the Candy Cane for the Holiday Season. Stripes are a way to make a Bold or Simple statement in decor. Whether it is a paint technique, embellishment or an application that implies a stripe. One of the more basic ways to amp up a space + to mix in more pattern.

A dramatic Interior Entryway- powerful statement

Seasonal influences on style, fashion, design + art

RAIN
SNOW
FALL
SUN

Call it a simple concept but better yet, a complex concept if you consider all of Seasons and their elements. It's not just weather that influences passion of creativity but the colors, shapes, patterns and textures bring the true depth of design to the forefront. As awesome as weather patterns + changes in the seasons, good design can inspire these grandeurs. Afterall, these are the things which make anything good worth taking a second look.

Back To Basics

This is the Color Wheel- a key player in color knowledge
Color Wheels traditionally show 12 colors, however, I prefer ones like this since it truly shows a range of colors and their components.

Here are a few interior shots dominantly based on Color:

Seattle Public Library Red Hallway- as dramatic in person as in the photo,
very 21st Century.

Green Bedroom. This color in particular is not welcoming, it has it's place but I don't believe it should be for a bedroom.

A small rustic kitchen and the Pink makes it come alive!
Luxe Yellow drapes make a statement of health + happiness according to Feng Shui. The little one on the chairs seems content.

White, the complicated color on the extreme end of the visual spectrum. A mood of calm + clean.

Missoni

Target launched their limited exclusive venture with renowned fashion house Missoni yesterday. All online product is Sold Out and stores are out of stock. Missoni is most notably known for this;

Bold geometric patterns catch attention of the viewer and wearer- fashion is art. At the same time it is subjective and not for everyone. If you want to make a statement bold is better.

Missoni also launched a furniture line and wishes to open a number of hotels by 2012. Most recently, they opened their second US store in Beverly Hills. Having had multiple interviews at this extraordinary location I did get an inside scoop and absorbed as much as I could to broaden my Design repertoire. Interiors always benefit from these advances.

Art

Still Life
Abraham van Beyeren - Banquet Still Life

Landscape

Rembrandt - Rembrant Self Portrait

Abstract

Sculpture

Anish Kapoor - Cloud Gate

Art plays a significant role in each of our lives whether we recognize this or not. It influences subliminally at its best. The above examples are a few of the finest of the art subjects I have known through my experience. Still Life, Landscape, Portrait, Abstract + Sculpture are Art subjects which influence our everday and our built environment. These concepts are most elementary and must be understood for a smart interior. Moreso, to be used in applicaton for the best Interior Design possible.

Slim Aarons 1916-2006

An American photographer noted for photographing socialites, jet-setters and celebrities, Slim Aaron, inspires with his work. These life filled photographs have great color, subject and composition. Interiors are often influenced by the exterior. His work is a great example of well lived lives which is the exact thing that a smart interior wants to evoke. He most certainly influenced our material world.

1st entry of this blog, I would like to introduce Flora + Fauna. These are central themes or motifs, if you will, which have been on my mind lately for their inspiration and exquisite character. These also influence our material world, common in our everyday lives. A natural place to start.
